Home Solar Installation: Step-by-Step Process
From the first site visit to switch-on, here's the full residential solar installation timeline and what each step actually involves.
Site survey and design (Week 1)
An engineer measures your roof, checks azimuth and tilt, evaluates shading and inspects your electrical panel. You'll receive a single-line diagram, a 3D layout and a production estimate.
Permits and approvals (Weeks 2–6)
The installer files for building permits, utility interconnection and (in India) DISCOM net-metering. Timelines vary by state — California averages 2–3 weeks, while DISCOMs in India can take 4–8 weeks.
Installation day (1–3 days)
Crews install racking, panels, inverter, conduit and the net meter. Most 6–10 kW homes are mechanically complete in two days. Final inspection and PTO (Permission to Operate) follow within 1–2 weeks.
